Balido, Other Wines, Uruguay

Balido by Other Wines — Orange Wine from Uruguay

Balido is a skin contact orange wine from Uruguay, made with Trebbiano and Petit Manseng grapes and left on skins for 90 days. It's amber-hued, gently textured and absolutely approachable — dried apricot, mandarin peel and wild herbs, with a clean mineral finish. If you've been curious about orange wine but didn't know where to start, start here.

Orange wine without the intimidation

Orange wine has a reputation for being intense and funky, but Balido breaks that mould completely. Yes, it spends 90 days on skins with native yeasts and comes out unfiltered — but the result is light, elegant and easy to drink. Minimal tannins, a gentle texture and a finish that's clean rather than confronting. It's an ideal first orange wine — and if you already love skin contact styles, it's a beautiful example of what Uruguay can do.

Named after the sheep

""Balido"" means ""bleating"" in Spanish — a tribute to the sheep that roam the vineyards at Cerro Chapeu while the vines lie dormant. It's a small detail that says a lot about how this wine is made: naturally, respectfully, with the land and its creatures as part of the process. The vineyard sits deep in the Uruguayan Pampas near the Brazilian border, where Pía and Piero Carrau farm the way their grandfather did — letting nature lead.

Trebbiano meets Petit Manseng

The base is primarily Trebbiano, giving the wine its light, crisp structure, while Petit Manseng skins provide the amber colour and those gorgeous dried fruit and herbal aromatics. It's made with native yeasts and left unfiltered — a proper low intervention wine that's vegan, gluten-free and full of personality.

About Other Wines

Founded by Gleb and Jack, Other Wines champions winemaking regions that most of the UK wine industry overlooks. Their range spans Moldova and Uruguay — two countries with deep winemaking roots but almost no presence on British shelves. They work directly with small, family-run vineyards and collaborate with London artists on every label, creating wines that look as distinctive as they taste.

At All Natty, we love that Other Wines bring genuine discoveries to our shelves — bottles you simply can't find elsewhere in Bristol. See the full Other Wines range at All Natty.

Also from Other Wines: Jumi-Juma, La Ventana, Dóldora.

When to open Balido

Balido shines alongside grilled salmon, roast pork or a board of aged cheese and spiced nuts. It's also a conversation starter at dinner parties — pour it for friends who've never tried orange wine and watch them get curious. Pair it with some Olives Et Al Sesame Peanuts for a dead easy aperitif spread.

Frequently asked questions

What does Balido taste like?

Balido has aromas of dried apricot, mandarin peel and wild herbs. On the palate, it's light and gently textured with minimal tannins — think subtle orange peel, a hint of tea-leaf bitterness, and a clean, mineral finish. It's one of the most approachable orange wines you'll find.

What food goes well with Balido?

It's brilliant with grilled fish, roast pork, or a spread of charcuterie and aged cheese. Spiced nuts are a great match too. Serve it lightly chilled — it works as an aperitif or right through a meal.

Can I get Balido delivered in Bristol?

Yes. All Natty delivers same-day across Bristol postcodes BS1 to BS16 when you order by 2pm. Delivery costs £3.50, or it's free on orders over £40. We also ship across the UK with 2-day priority delivery, and you can collect for free from Willway Yard in Bedminster.

What is orange wine?

Orange wine is made from white grapes that are left in contact with their skins during fermentation — the same way red wine is made, but using white grapes. This skin contact gives the wine its amber or orange colour and adds texture and complexity. Balido is a brilliant introduction to the style: gentle, approachable and not at all overwhelming.

Is Balido vegan?

Yes. Balido is vegan and gluten-free. It's made using native yeasts and minimal intervention methods — no animal products are involved in the winemaking.
