Syrah, 5 O'Clock Wines, France

5 O'Clock Wines Syrah — Vivid Languedoc Red from Alma Cersius

5 O'Clock Wines Syrah is a vivid, juicy red from the Languedoc — spicy blackberry and blueberry fruit with hints of liquorice and bay leaf, all wrapped in a wine that's generous without being heavy. Made by the Alma Cersius cooperative near Beziers, this is proper southern French Syrah at a price that means you can drink it any night of the week.

Spicy, juicy and built for real life

This is Syrah at its most inviting — not the brooding, tannic style you might associate with the Northern Rhone, but a bright, fruit-forward expression from the warmth of the Languedoc. Blackberry and blueberry lead, with peppery spice, a lick of liquorice and a savoury bay leaf edge that gives it depth without weight. It's medium-bodied, smooth and has just enough grip to make it interesting with food. Pour it at room temperature or give it a light chill — it works both ways.

Sun-drenched grapes, cool-wind freshness

The vineyards sit near Beziers on pebble and clay soils, between the Mediterranean coast and the Pyrenees. The Cers — a cold, dry wind from the west — is the secret weapon here, tempering the southern heat and keeping the grapes fresh. It's why this Syrah has brightness and energy where you might expect something flat and jammy. The Alma Cersius cooperative are committed to ecological farming, and you can taste the quality of the fruit in every glass.

Everyday red, not everyday quality

At £12.50, this is the red wine that earns a permanent spot in your kitchen. It's good enough to bring to a dinner party, easy enough to pour on a Monday, and versatile enough to work with basically anything you're eating. The 5 O'Clock label says it all — this is wine for that moment when the day's done and you deserve something good. No ceremony required.

About 5 O'Clock Wines

The 5 O'Clock range comes from Alma Cersius, a cooperative of around 150 growers who tend 1,200 hectares of sun-drenched vineyard near Beziers. They've won stacks of gold medals at international competitions, but what we love is their philosophy — a glass of wine should simply be delicious. That's it. No jargon, no posturing, just well-made wine from people who take their vines seriously and their marketing lightly.

All Natty stocks 5 O'Clock Wines because they're exactly what we look for: tasty, well-priced and from makers who give a damn. See the full 5 O'Clock Wines range at All Natty.

Also from 5 O'Clock Wines: Viognier, Rosé.

Frequently asked questions

What does 5 O'Clock Wines Syrah taste like?

It's a vivid, juicy Syrah with spicy blackberry and blueberry fruit, hints of liquorice and bay leaf, and a smooth, medium-bodied finish. It has freshness and brightness rather than heaviness — proper southern French Syrah that's generous without being overwhelming. Serve at room temperature or with a light chill.

What food pairs with 5 O'Clock Wines Syrah?

Syrah loves bold flavours — steak, lamb, sausages, burgers, BBQ, pizza and strong cheeses all work brilliantly. It's also great with spiced dishes like a tagine or chilli. Basically, if it's hearty and flavourful, this Syrah will match it.

Can I get 5 O'Clock Wines Syrah delivered in Bristol?

Yes. All Natty delivers same-day across Bristol postcodes BS1–BS16 — order before 2pm and it's at your door by 8pm. Local delivery is £3.50, or free on orders over £40. We ship UK-wide too, with 2-day priority delivery.

Is 5 O'Clock Wines Syrah like Shiraz?

Syrah and Shiraz are the same grape — Syrah is the French name, Shiraz the Australian. French Syrah, like this one from the Languedoc, tends to be more peppery and savoury with dark fruit and herbal notes, while Australian Shiraz is often richer, jammier and higher in alcohol. If you enjoy Shiraz but want something a bit more refined and food-friendly, Languedoc Syrah is a great place to explore.

Should you chill 5 O'Clock Wines Syrah?

A light chill can work really well, especially in warmer weather — 15 minutes in the fridge takes the edge off and brings out the fruit character. In cooler months, room temperature is perfect. It's a versatile wine that doesn't demand fussy serving.
