The Wharie Experience
The Wharie Experience — Minimal-Intervention Wine from Hampshire's New Forest
The Wharie Experience is the work of Guillaume Lagger, a Swiss-trained oenologist making wine, cider, and mead on a small farm near Sway in the New Forest. What makes Wharie different from most English vineyards is the grape varieties: Guillaume grows exclusively PIWI grapes — disease-resistant varieties that need virtually no spraying. The result is genuinely low-intervention English wine from a vineyard that hasn't been sprayed since planting. No shortcuts, no gimmicks — just good farming and careful winemaking in one of the prettiest corners of Hampshire.
Why PIWI grapes matter
Most English vineyards rely on conventional varieties like Chardonnay or Pinot Noir, which need regular spraying to survive the British climate. Guillaume took a different path. His vineyard is planted entirely with PIWI varieties — Solaris, Sauvignac, Souvignier Gris, Muscaris, Pinotin, Cabernet Noir, and more. These grapes have natural resistance to fungal disease, which means the vineyard runs with minimal chemical input. It's a quietly radical approach that lets the land and the fruit do the talking. Try the Orion 2022 for a taste of what these varieties can do.
Award-winning Hampshire wine
Small vineyard, big reputation. The Wharie Experience picked up the Still Trophy at the 2022 International English Wine Awards for their Pinot Gris, along with a Gold Medal for their Orange Bacchus. Their Ortega 2023 — described as ""50% orange wine, 50% white wine, 100% delicious"" — won Silver at the IEWA25. For a vineyard where the first vines went into the ground in 2021, that's a seriously impressive start.
A Swiss winemaker in the New Forest
Guillaume Lagger trained in Switzerland before moving to his partner's family farm in Hampshire. He brought with him a philosophy built on restraint: cultivate the vines to their full potential by keeping intervention to a strict minimum. The Wharie Experience operates as a micro winery on a 6.5-hectare farm, with 1.8 hectares of vines and an additional hectare of fruit trees. Visits are welcome by appointment — it's one of the few places in the UK where you can taste a proper range of PIWI wines.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of wines does The Wharie Experience make?
The Wharie Experience produces still white, rosé, and red wines from PIWI grape varieties grown in Hampshire's New Forest. They also make cider and mead from fruit trees on the same farm. The wines are made with minimal intervention — Guillaume's philosophy is to let the fruit express itself with as little interference as possible. At All Natty, you can try the Orion 2022 and The Rosé.
What are PIWI grapes?
PIWI stands for ""pilzwiderstandsfähig"" — a German word meaning fungus-resistant. These grape varieties have been bred to resist common vine diseases like mildew, which means they need far less spraying than traditional varieties. The Wharie Experience grows varieties including Solaris, Sauvignac, Souvignier Gris, Muscaris, Pinotin, and Cabernet Noir.
